For all of you who grow cacti indoors, what kind of lighting do you use for peyote/san pedro? If this is covered elsewhere please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Right now Im using 2, 2' sun blaster fluorescent lights for my garden. They are very thin and use hardly any energy. I highly recommend them. I think I paid around 17 bucks for each. They come with everything to mount it with as well. I mounted my to an old HPS shade I had kicking around. It works wonders. Hope this help

Are these fluorescent lights enough for San Pedros?
I always let my San Pedros rest in winter so they won't grow thin. However I'd love to have them grow all year long

I have to agree, I always have a few CFL's lying around for the winter time. This reminds me of an Erowid article I can't seem to dig up. Basically it depends on what you want from your cacti. If you use a lower light spectrum (2700k) which is more of a red light, your cacti will grow slower but produce more alkaloids. If you use 5600-6400 they will grow faster but have less alkaloid production. That being said, if it's winter time, where most cacti are stressed anyways due to less watering and colder temperatures, they're usually building up alkaloids anyway. (A lot of people swear that the best time to consume one is right after the end of winter, where the cutting is made, placed in a burlap sack for about two weeks and then consumed).

Nonetheless depending on how many San Pedro's you have, I'd say two 100 watt CFL's should be more then adequate for each one (plus they are much cheaper on the electric bill). Set up a timer for 10-12 hours, and it's hands free year round growing. Lastly, try to leave them in a warmer spot as they still require higher temps to grow as if it was summer time. Cacti need some 20.000 lux for growing well, you can't get that from TL's or bulbs.

When there is too few light in winter time (locations above 20-30 degrees northern latitude),
it is best to give your Cacti a resting period by stop watering in Oktober.
From March 1st you can water the Cacti again.

What about 600 or 1000W hps?

They will grow too small with artificial lighning, so better is direct sunshine.
Plants use mostly the ultra-violett range of light-radiation.

So better is HpI (high pressure iodide)-bulbs, which gives more UV.
Or TL's for plant-grow (Sylvania Growlux, Osram Fluora).
